Department Activities

The department activities are guided by the 'One Point Agenda' strategy in building a professional culture among us. We regularly host various events and workshops to promote learning and professional development among our students, staff, and faculty. These events and workshops cover a wide range of topics related to mechanical engineering, such as design, manufacturing, materials, and thermodynamics. Overall, we are committed to providing a comprehensive learning experience to our students. Key bodies involved in this include 'Mechanical Association', 'Society of Automotive Engineers', 'NSS', 'Industry Institute Interaction Cell', 'Career Guidance & Placement Cell', 'IEDC & TBI'.

The department has initiated a Project Mentoring system to enable project-based learning for our students. A Project Lab has been set up as a 24/7 facility for student learning space. We envisage building a multidisciplinary team-working culture.

MECHEXCEL Summit 2026

The Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully organized MECHEXCEL Summit 2026 on 23rd July 2026, providing a platform for students to present innovative ideas and demonstrate their technical knowledge, creativity, and teamwork. Student representatives from SAE, Project X, CGPC, REVIVE, the Alumni Association, and other teams participated in the summit by pitching proposals aimed at enhancing departmental activities and student development. Team MECH FORCES – REVIVE emerged as the champions of the summit and was awarded a seed fund of ₹10,000 to support the further development of their proposal, while each of the other participating teams received ₹2,500 as encouragement for their innovative efforts. The event was evaluated by an esteemed judging panel comprising Dr. Manju Manuel, Prof. Jinesh Jose, and Prof. Sreedivya R. S., whose valuable feedback enriched the participants' learning experience. The Department also expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr. Raghunathan Rajesh, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, for conceptualizing and guiding the MECHEXCEL Summit initiative. The event concluded successfully with the collective efforts of the participants, mentors, faculty members, and coordinators, making it a memorable and inspiring academic event.

EXCELIA 2026: Celebrating Academic Excellence and Student Achievements

EXCELIA 2026, the programme to recognize academic excellence and student achievements, was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Government Engineering College Idukki, on 16 July 2026. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Sunil Kumar, Professor, RIT Kottayam, and presided over by Dr. Baiju Sasidharan, Principal, Government Engineering College Idukki. Students who secured top positions in the semester examinations were felicitated, while those who had received accolades in various academic, technical, sports, and extracurricular activities were also honoured. The award recipients shared their experiences and motivated fellow students by reflecting on their journey towards success. The programme celebrated the achievements of students and encouraged a culture of academic excellence and holistic development within the department.

Expert Talk on Career Pathways in Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an Expert Talk on "Career Pathways in Mechanical Engineering" on 16 July 2026. The session was delivered by Dr. K. Sunil Kumar, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Placement Officer, RIT Kottayam. The talk provided students with valuable insights into career opportunities, higher studies, and industry expectations in the field of mechanical engineering.

Department Newsletter Insights Released

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Government Engineering College Idukki, officially released its department newsletter, "Insights," on 16 July 2026.

The newsletter was officially released by Dr. K. Sunil Kumar (Professor, RIT, Kottayam)  in the presence of Dr. Baiju Sasidharan, Principal, Dr. Raghunathan Rajesh, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the faculty members of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Industrial visit

S8 (2022-2026) Mechanical Engineering students undertook an industrial visit to Rubber King, Ahmedabad, on 28 January 2026. The visit provided valuable exposure to modern rubber manufacturing processes, quality control practices, and industrial operations, enabling students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world engineering applications while gaining insights into industry best practices.

S4(2024-2028) Mechanical Engineering students visited Autocast Ltd. on 11 February 2026, where they were exposed to modern manufacturing processes, industrial workflows, and quality control practices.
 

Expert Talk on Latest Tools and Trends in Design and Engineering

An Expert Talk was organized on 6 April 2026, featuring Prof. Antony J. K. and Dr. Manoj Kumar M. from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology (RIT), Kottayam, as resource persons. The session focused on the latest tools and emerging trends in design and engineering, providing students with valuable insights into modern engineering practices, advanced design technologies, and current industry requirements. The talk enriched the participants' understanding of contemporary developments in the field and emphasized the importance of continuous learning and upskilling for a successful engineering career.

MechExpo 2026 Celebrates Student Innovation and Excellence

MechExpo was organized on 25 March 2026 as a platform to showcase the innovative final-year B.Tech projects developed by the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The event provided an opportunity for students to demonstrate their technical expertise, creativity, and problem-solving abilities through project exhibits evaluated by faculty members and industry professionals. Among the showcased projects, the team comprising Kannan, Abey, Nidhin Lal, and Athul received the Best Project Award and was also honored with the prestigious Abdul Basith Edathadathil Memorial Excellence Award in recognition of their outstanding project work, innovation, and engineering excellence. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Ranjith S. Kumar & Prof. Robin David.

Industry Quiz

An Industry Quiz Competition was conducted on 11 March 2026 to enhance students' awareness of industrial practices, emerging technologies, and current developments in the engineering sector. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, who demonstrated their technical knowledge and analytical skills through multiple rounds of competition. The first prize was awarded to Edwin Tomy and Arya A. R., while Advaith Anil and Abhishek secured the second prize for their excellent performance. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Vishnu A.R. & Prof. Yadhu G.
 

Participation in the Skill Kerala Global Summit 2025

Mr. Abdulla Ibnu Asharaf, Dr. Swapnesh S., Mr. Farhan E.M., Ms. Deepthi Regimon participated in Skill Kerala Global Summit 2025, Kochi on 29-30 Aug 2025 under the aegis of K-DISC and the Vijnana Keralam initiative, where global experts, industry leaders, academia, and policymakers gathered to shape Kerala’s future as a knowledge and talent hub.

An industrial visit was conducted for first-semester students on 14 November 2025 to the Sengulam, Panniyar, and Vellathooval hydro power plants.

MECHANICAL ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION

The Department Association Inauguration and Magazine Release Function of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Government Engineering College, Idukki, was held on 21 October 2025 at 4:00 PM in the Seminar Hall, Administrative Block.

• Oath taking ceremony for newely elected office bearers.
• The Department Magazine, 'Mechingenuity; volume 2' was officially released by the Magazine Team, marking another milestone in showcasing student creativity and technical engagement.
• Certificates of appreciation was awarded to the magazine team.
• Expert Talk by Dr. Girish N. Namboodiri, Scientist F, NDTF, Rocket Propellant Plant, VSSC–ISRO, was conducted. His talk focused on career opportunities in space applications, particularly in the field of Non-Destructive Testing, and various certified programs that will upskill mechanical engineering graduates.

The second issue of the department magazine ‘Mechangenuity’ is scheduled for release in October 2025.

The SAE team successfully organized a Welding Workshop on 19th September 2025, led by Mr. Shibu P. R. We are delighted to witness the enthusiasm, energy, and team spirit of our Mechanical Engineering students.

MECHINGENUITY is the product of Prof. Nanda Kishore and Team, consisting of Prof. Ranjith, Prof. Vishnu, Mr. Aneesh, Mr. Farhan, Mr. Alan, Ms. Deepthi, Ms. Varsha, Ms. Angel, and Ms. Libi. It is definitely a milestone for the department.

Best Project Award function was held on 3rd April. Project Lab Inauguration

Project Lab Inauguration function was held on 3rd April. The chief guest for the function was our 2009 GEC Idukki Alumni Mr. Vijeesh N.V. (Additional District Industry Officer, Idukki). It is definitely a milestone for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. We are starting the journey towards project based learning, and the new space shall equip the Project Mentoring programme initiated in the department this semester (lead by Prof. Ranjith & Team).
